Lighting Projects
The Union Square Foundation has launched a comprehensive lighting program to enhance safety and revitalize public spaces around Union Square, made possible through the generous support of the Chris Larsen Foundation.
Uplighting of the Dewey Monument
As part of this initiative, The Foundation has illuminated all the palm trees around Union Square and the Alma statue with up-lighting. Additionally, string lights have been installed on all the trees along the north side of the Plaza. These lights, which shine from dusk to dawn, not only enhance safety but also highlight this iconic area.
The program also extends to other parts of the Union Square District. The Foundation has installed string lights on trees along Geary Street near the Kearny intersection, thanks to the property owner of 1 Kearny Street who kindly provided power access. Furthermore, bistro lights now adorn the trees surrounding the Parc55 Hilton hotel, adding a warm, inviting glow.
Looking ahead, The Foundation plans to install bistro lights in all major alleys within Union Square. The first successful installation was in Elwood Alley, near the intersection of O'Farrell and Mason, with the support of the Handlery and King George Hotels. These lights, which operate 24/7, significantly improve safety in the area. Following Elwood Alley, The Foundation has installed bistro lights along Campton Place on Grant Avenue, with power supplied by the TAJ Hotel and support from local property owners.
The Foundation continues to engage with property owners to expand this program and bring light to every corner of Union Square.
